Twitter said to be teaming with Stripe for in-tweet payments

Twitter could soon announce a partnership that would allow retailers to accept payment directly in tweets, according to a report by Recode.

Twitter may soon be a platform retailers use for more than just advertising and marketing. If a report published today is accurate, retailers may soon be able to sell products and take payments directly in tweets.
According to the report by Recode on Thursday, Twitter may be teaming up with the online payments service Stripe to make it possible for retailers to accept credit cards directly through tweets.

"The deal, which is in the final stages but not yet complete," Recode wrote, "will be the surest sign that the social network is finally serious about making it easier for brands, retailers or manufacturers to sell stuff directly on Twitter."
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation, and Stripe spokesperson Kelly Sims said she couldn't comment.

If the report is accurate, this would be a very big move for Twitter. Presumably, it could get a small slice of any transactions -- which would help it move towards profitability. But perhaps even more important, it would no doubt drive a wide variety of new marketing initiatives directly to Twitter. After all, if advertising campaigns conducted on the social network could be immediately converted to sales, that could create an all-new market for merchants eager to reach consumers where they spend their time.

This wouldn't be the first time that commerce could be conducted directly inside Twitter. Last February, Twitter teamed with American Express to make it possible for that card's users to buy things through select retailers simply by tweeting a special hashtag.
Stripe could be a good partner for Twitter because its Stripe Connect service allows online merchants to accept payments by credit card without setting up an account of any kind.

Netflix 'original' documentary lands Oscar nomination

The video service picked festival darling "The Square," a documentary about the Egyptian revolution, as its first "original" film, keen to add an Oscar to its tally of awards.

"The Square," a Netflix-backed film about the 2011 Egyptian revolution, secured an Oscar nomination for documentary feature on Thursday, fulfilling the Academy Awards buzz it drummed up at film festivals.
"The Square," which profiles the Egyptian revolution from the perspective of young activists there, was Netflix's first major acquisition in its original documentary initiative in November. In July, Netflix had said it would be widening its original strategy beyond TV series to "broadly appealing" feature documentaries.
"The Square" will be available to Netflix subscribers in all areas starting Friday.

The film won the Toronto International Film Festival Documentary People's Choice Award this year, and an earlier version of it won the Audience Award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It was also screened previously in New York and California theaters to qualify it for Oscar consideration.
The film will be opening in a slew of movie houses across the US -- and in other countries -- Friday, as well as going live on Netflix. While its early screenings were self-financed, funding from Netflix surely helped broaden the release now.

Like "Derek," another Netflix original before it, "The Square" broadens the idea of what an original for the company means. "Derek" and "The Square" were developed, produced, and shown to some audiences before Netflix ever got involved. Netflix has picked up film-festival fodder for its streaming service before, but this is the first time it has branded it as its own.
Earlier this year, Netflix won several Emmys for its original series "House of Cards," and earlier this week Robin Wright won a Golden Globe for her acting in that series.
By taking "The Square" under its wing, Netflix may add an Oscar to its shelf as well.

T-Mobile hosts Macklemore concert after CEO thrown out of one

The company is hosting a special performance in the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles on January 23.

T-Mobile said Thursday that it's sponsoring a special performance by the Grammy-nominated artists for 1,400 Los Angeles-area fans. The concert will be held on January 23, with tickets to go on sale on January 17.

Legere, of course, made headlines at the Consumer Electronics Show last week when he crashed a private party hosted by AT&T. The musical guest for the party: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
After Legere was spotted and outed by this reporter, security subsequently escorted Legere out of the hotel.

Legere insisted he just wanted to see Macklemore perform, and indeed got his invitation from the rapper's agent, but it's clear things turned out just rosy for him. His ejection from the party was the talk of the trade show, and he utilized the incident to great effect during the company's press conference, even making T-shirts saying he just wanted to see Macklemore.
"My appreciation for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis seems to be the worst-kept secret in the social hemisphere," Legere said in a statement.

Apple to refund at least $32.5M for kids' in-app purchases

As part of an agreement with the FTC, Apple also must change its billing practices to require consent from consumers before charging them for in-app purchases.

Apple has to refund at least $32.5 million to customers in a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over in-app purchases.

Announced Wednesday by the FTC, the agreement settles a complaint from the agency that Apple charged consumers millions of dollars over in-app purchases made by kids without parental consent. Under the agreement, Apple also must now change its billing methods to make sure it receives "express, informed consent" from users before it charges them for such purchases.

"This settlement is a victory for consumers harmed by Apple's unfair billing, and a signal to the business community: whether you're doing business in the mobile arena or the mall down the street, fundamental consumer protections apply," FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said in a statement. "You cannot charge consumers for purchases they did not authorize."

Specifically, the complaint charged Apple with violating the FTC Act by not telling parents that entering a password to approve an initial in-app purchase would allow 15 minutes of additional purchases without further authorization needed. Apple's in-app purchase screen prompts for a password but doesn't reveal that the password opens the door for those extra 15 minutes, the FTC said.

The FTC said that Apple had received "tens of thousands" of complaints, if not more, about children having made unauthorized in-app purchases that added up to millions of dollars. It cited, as just one example, the case of a consumer whose daughter spent $2,600 in the app "Tap Pet Hotel," and other instances of children incurring more than $500 in charges in the apps "Dragon Story" and "Tiny Zoo Friends."

In a statement following the FTC announcement, Apple acknowledged the need to be attentive to how children interact with online services:
"Protecting children has been a top priority for the App Store from the very beginning, and Apple is proud to have set the gold standard for online stores by making the App Store a safe place for customers of all ages," Apple said in the statement. "Today's agreement with the FTC extends our existing refund program for in-app purchases which may have been made without a parent's permission."

Apple has until March 31 of this year to revise its billing practices to fulfill its part of the bargain. Beyond requiring informed consent for in-app purchases, Apple must also give consumers the option to withdraw their consent at any time.

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the settlement in a memo to employees, according to Recode. Cook said that Apple had been negotiating with the FTC for "several months" over the in-app purchase issue but claimed that the proposal doesn't "require us to do anything we weren't already going to do." Cook described Apple's refund plans in the memo:
Last year, we set out to refund any in-app purchase which may have been made without a parent's permission. We wanted to reach every customer who might have been affected, so we sent emails to 28 million App Store customers - anyone who had made an in-app purchase in a game designed for kids. When some emails bounced, we mailed the parents postcards. In all, we received 37,000 claims and we will be reimbursing each one as promised.
But Cook also took aim at the FTC over rehashing this issue after a federal court had already approved a settlement, saying the agency's lawsuit "smacked of double jeopardy."

The original "Batman" TV series ran on ABC from 1966-68, with actors Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin) keeping Gotham safe from the likes of the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Joker (Cesar Romero), and Catwoman (played by an array of actresses such as Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt).

The campy caped-crusader crime-fighting TV show was never released on DVD, until now thanks to Warner Bros. Entertainment, which confirmed the release through O'Brien's tweet on its their Facebook page with the statement: "We've always wondered why you never see Conan O'Brien Presents: Team Coco & Batman in the same room..." Only the 1966 feature film was available previously from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Last year, DC Comics payed tribute to the classic TV show by releasing a special line of digital comics called "DC2" with the "Batman '66" title which featured West and Ward as Batman and Robin, fighting old foes.

Smart home tech at CES 2014: Join us for a great debate.

It's early years for connected home technology, and this is when the fun happens. Join our panel of industry thinkers as we debate new standards and imagine the future of the smart house.

Once upon a time, home theater stories dominated CES. For years, TVs, TVs, and more TVs made the biggest headlines at the show. But times change, and while you'll find giant 4K televisions and curved OLEDs littering the show floor this year, we're expecting new topics to bubble up. Car tech and wearables will make waves, and so will a new breed of in-home technology that extends far beyond the living room.
 
Some smart home devices -- connected light bulbs and thinking thermostats, for example -- have made their way into homes already. But this year, these early pioneers will usher in a full-blown movement. By the end of 2014, a dizzying array of connected home devices will enter the fray, communicating across the Internet and your home network from every room in the house.

HP Slate 21 Pro fuses desktop monitor and Android all-in-one

Remember the days of the simple, old-fashioned Windows PC? Those days seem long behind us, as major PC manufacturers continue to explore alternatives in an ever-fragmenting computing landscape. At CES 2014, HP’s prime offering serves as a clear indicator of the sea change: the HP Slate 21 Pro, HP’s headlining product, is a business-targeted update to the HP Slate 21, a 21.5-inch Android all-in-one desktop tablet that doubles as a PC monitor.

The HP Slate 21 Pro adds some extra oomph to the last version, with 16GB of onboard storage, 2GB of RAM, and Android 4.3 along with a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 4 processor. It’s not tremendously exciting hardware-wise, but this large 1,920x1,080 IPS display tablet still only costs $399 and comes with a keyboard and mouse in the box.

The far bigger deal is that this all-in-one also doubles as a monitor: yes, there’s an HDMI input, so this effectively is also a 1080p optical touchscreen IPS monitor, too. There are also 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, audio/mic out, and a USB 2.0 upstream port for Windows touch display compatibility.
802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, a 720p webcam and microphone, stereo speakers, and an SD card slot mean this could be — and is intended to be — a stand-alone system. But for who, exactly? Perhaps small businesses, or educational markets, or kiosks, as HP envisions. Android 4.3 allows for easier multi-user access. Also included are some business-friendly tools: pre-installed Kingoffice software, Citrix XenMobile and Receiver support, and Skype / HP MyRoom for video conferencing.

Matte black and boxy, the HP Slate 21 Pro looks like what it costs. But the additional perk of being a plain old monitor could help add a lot of appeal. The bigger question is, do small business and education markets want a large-screen Android PC at all?

Roku TV unveiled: Television sets with Roku streaming built-in.

Roku is partnering with Hisense and TCL to release six TVs this fall that have the company's superb Smart TV platform built-in -- no box required.

LAS VEGAS -- No one outside Cupertino knows if we'll ever see an Apple Television, but we won't have to wait long to see a Roku TV.

Roku announced the Roku TV platform today at CES 2014, partnering with Chinese manufacturers Hisense and TCL to produce the first sets. Six models are slated to launch this fall -- three from each company -- in sizes from 32 to 55 inches.

A Roku TV is exactly what it sounds like: a standard HDTV that essentially has a Roku box built-in. The idea isn't all that different than the Smart TV features included by most TV manufacturers, except that it's Roku's excellent software, which means Roku TVs will have access to over 1,000 channels, cross-platform search for movies and TV shows, and a clean, simple user interface. Roku's best-in-class streaming software is one of the main reasons the company's boxes have earned CNET's Editors' Choice Award over tough competitors like the Apple TV and Google Chromecast.

Unlike most traditional TVs, when you turn on a Roku TV, the first thing you'll see is the Roku home screen. The interface looks nearly identical to the one found on modern Roku boxes, with the exception of icons for your other devices, such as "Cable" and "Blu-ray."

Those icons are basically fancy input labels. Once you select a device, it will switch to the corresponding input, but then you'll have to pick up its remote, as a Roku TV can't control other devices like a cable DVR. The interface should feel relatively snappy, as Roku claims Roku TV's internal processor is faster than its standard boxes, although not quite as speedy as the Roku 3's chip.

The Roku TV remote looks a lot like a standard Roku remote with just a few added buttons for TV control. The big addition is the red power button at the top, plus there's a volume rocker and a mute button on the side. What the initial press photos don't show is the headphone jack feature that's so popular on the Roku 3 and Roku 2. Roku said that manufacturers will have the option to implement that feature on Roku TVs, but it doesn't appear that these initial models will support the feature.
Technically, Roku TV is a "reference design platform and software stack" for manufacturers, and what's even more interesting is that Roku says it will be responsible for software updates in the future. That's potentially a big bonus for buyers, as major manufacturers tend to abandon their existing Smart TV software as soon as new models come out the next year.

The first Roku TVs are scheduled to be available from US and Canadian retailers this fall, and although not pricing hasn't been announced yet, Roku did say there will be entry-level price points. Both Hisense and TCL will be showing their Roku TVs at the show and we'll be going hands-on to get more details on each company's new sets.


Sharp boasts 'game changer' high-res Aquos Quattron Plus TV.

(Credit: James Martin/CNET) Sharp unveiled its new line of Aquos TVs on Monday, once again showing the consumer-electronics world that it knows how to think big.

The company touted the Aquos 4K, Aquos Q, and what Sharp President John Herrington called a "game changer" TV, the Aquos Quattron Plus, which has 10 million more subpixels than full HD. Sharp will release these TVs in a matter of weeks.

The Quattron Plus is meant to be a stopgap between 1,080p and 4K HDTVs at about half the price of 4k models, according to Sharp. The company said the Plus is the highest resolution full-HD TV available and is the only TV that can play 4K content and has a built-in upscaler designed to make everything you watch sharper.

Toshi Osawa, CEO of Sharp, said at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014 that the new line will once again be top sellers among the world's largest HDTVs.
"Sharp has put more 60-inch or larger televisions in American homes than any other manufacturer," Osawa said.

Qualcomm cuts Toq smartwatch $50 in honor of CES.

Qualcomm on Monday announced that it will cut $50 off the price of its Toq smartwatch in honor of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The deal, which ends January 11, brings the device's cost down to $300 from its regular $350 price tag.

The Qualcomm Toq has quickly become one of many smartwatches on the market. The device, which launched last year, hasn't necessarily set itself apart in the marketplace. CNET's Scott Stein expressed doubt last year that it could attract many customers, due mainly to its price tag and stiff competition. Like everyone else, Qualcomm is seemingly expecting competitors to show off new smartwatches at CES this week, and its latest move might be an effort to grab some headlines while its competitors are doing the same.

AT&T to launch HD voice this year

AT&T's head of mobility, Ralph de la Vega, made the announcement at the company's developer press conference. De la Vega was announcing a new Asus smartphone, the Padfone X.
The phone will be the first to get access to AT&T's LTE Advanced network, as well as HD voice.
AT&T is the third carrier to talk up HD voice, following Sprint, which first spoke about the feature two years ago, and T-Mobile, which touted HD voice at last year's CES.

Dish focuses on multiroom streaming with wireless extenders, apps for LG TVs, PlayStation, Android.

For the past couple of years, Dish's kangaroo-themed CES announcements have centered on its Hopper DVR, which acts as a command center for whole-home Dish systems, enabling you to access content on Joey set-top extender boxes in other rooms and stream it to mobile devices using the Hopper's integrated Sling feature.

For 2014, the company has shifted gears a bit and the headline act here at CES is not the Hopper, but the Joey, which will soon come in four versions (aka a "troop") instead of just one. Along with the standard Joey, Dish is introducing the new Super Joey, the Wireless Joey, and the "Virtual Joey," which is really just an app. All are scheduled to be available within the first half of the year.
Dish also has some upgrades in store for the Hopper, but they're software upgrades, with enhancements to the user interface, content discovery, and the Dish Anywhere app, which will soon be available for Android devices.

The other bit of the news that's sure to get some attention is that Dish will be bringing its Virtual Joey app to Sony's PS3 and PS4, enabling owners of those game consoles to use them as virtual Dish set-top boxes so long as they have a Dish Hopper subscription (it's an easy way to add a Joey to another room or TV without having to pay the monthly fee for the box). Yesterday, Dish announced that LG Smart TVs would be Virtual Joey-enabled, but the PS3/PS4 announcement allows the company to reach a broader audience with Virtual Joey.

New physical Joeys
The original Joey won't look any different, but it will get some changes on the inside that Dish says will improve its performance, doubling its speed.
The new Super Joey is scheduled to be released early this year (Q1), and Dish CEO Joe Clayton says that as its name implies, it's a "super-powered" Joey. It adds two additional network tuners to the Hopper system, so you can record up to eight shows simultaneously when using Dish's controversial PrimeTime Anytime recording feature that records every show in prime time from ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC while offering you the option of stripping out the ads. (The Hopper's ability to autoskip TV commercials on its recordings is the subject of ongoing lawsuits from the major TV broadcasters, including CBS, the parent company of CNET.) Previously you could record up to six programs.
Meanwhile, the Wireless Joey, due out in the spring (Q2) is arguably the most interesting new Joey in the troop. Instead of having to deal with connecting a coaxial cable, you simply plug the Wireless Joey into a power outlet, then connect it to your TV via HDMI (or a composite connection for older standard-definition TVs). The Wireless Joey interfaces with your Hopper via a Dish 802.11ac Wireless Access Point (it connects to the Hopper) that creates a private wireless network that can be shared by two Wireless Joeys per Wireless Access Point. The 802.11ac Wi-Fi offers better range and performance, and Dish claims the wire-free Joey's operation will look and feel just like a wired Joey.
The key benefit to going wireless is that you have much more flexibility in where you place your TV in a room (it doesn't have to be near a coaxial connection), and the new box should work well for wall-mounted installations.

App enhancements
Dish has made some big changes to its Dish Anywhere app. With last year's Hopper upgrade, users could record shows and then transfer them to their iPads. However, doing that required you to run a separate app, Dish Transfers, to move content to the iPad. Now Dish Transfers has been integrated into Dish Anywhere, which will soon (Q1) run on iPhones (and iPod Touches) as well as Android smartphones and tablets. Kindle tablets will also get the app early this year. (We haven't confirmed yet whether older Kindle tablets will be able to run the app.)
Dish Explorer for the iPad is also being enhanced with voice search features for live, OnDemand, and recorded shows, and you'll also be able to search with your voice for title, actor, and genre.
 
Dish transformation: part 3
We're still fleshing out the details of some of the announcements and will update this post with new info as we get it. But summing things up, after the introduction of the Hopper two years ago, "part 3" of Dish's transformation, as CEO Joe Clayton bills 2014's announcements, it appears the company feels it's solidified the foundation of its system (the Hopper) and is now in the process of building out and enhancing its peripheral components, which were certainly ripe for an upgrade.

Toyota shows off Fuel Cell Vehicle, will be on sale in 2015

At the Consumer Electronics Show, the automotive company on Monday talked up its big bet for electric cars: fuel cell technology, which boasts no emissions but water vapor. The cars will hit the market in 2015, Toyota said.

While a competitor like Tesla uses pure battery power to make its vehicles run, Toyota's offering -- the first of its kind to be put on sale for consumers -- uses hydrogen to generate electricity on board the car. In layman's terms, here's how it works: Pure hydrogen is pumped into the tank and combined with air to create water, a reaction that also produces electricity. The fuel cell channels the electricity to a drive motor, powering the car.

"We didn't reinvent the wheel; we just reinvented everything that turns it," said Bob Carter, senior vice president of automotive operations for Toyota. The company initially unveiled the fuel cell vehicle at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, but Monday marked the car's North American debut.

At the convention center, the company displayed two cars: a four-door blue sedan and an engineering prototype, or a "mule," covered in camouflage that Toyota used for testing in North America. The company said that the car can travel 300 miles on one tank of fuel, and that fill-up time would take about 3 to 5 minutes. It added that it can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 10 seconds.

A Toyota spokesperson explained to CNET that the fuel cell vehicle had been a long time coming: The company started working on it more than 20 years ago, in 1992, in Japan, getting the first model on the road for testing in 1996. Carter said that technological advancements and price reductions have recently made it possible to now offer the car in greater volumes.
While the company said the car would come to market next year, other than that, not everything has been decided. No price points yet, though Toyota said it wants the cars to be accessible and "reasonably priced." The official name of the vehicle and specific volume of cars in each market will be announced later.
Toyota said the car will initially launch in California. The biggest factor is building enough specialized fuel stations in a particular market for it to be convenient to an owner. The company said it is working with the University of California, Irvine, to map out locations for station sites from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego. Toyota said the state has already approved $200 million in funding to build about 20 stations by 2015, and a total of 40 by the year after that.

So what are the advantages over a pure battery-powered car? Toyota says that the fuel cell approach is better for longer distances. The company also notes that the refueling time is much quicker than the time it takes to charge a battery. "We love batteries," Carter said. "But the rate of cost reduction in fuel cell tech is staggering. That's why hydrogen fuel cells will be in cars quicker than we believe, and in much greater numbers than expected."

Generating electricity on board has other benefits, Carter said. He said Toyota is looking to develop a power supply device that would allow the car to power a house for a week in the face of an emergency situation.

Samsung's newest Note tablet includes premium specs, widget-based interface, and 12.2-inch screen

LAS VEGAS -- Along with the new Galaxy TabPro line, Samsung's new NotePro makes a significant step toward the company leaving behind the traditional Android interface in favor of something more graphical and immediate. Look for Wi-Fi and LTE versions -- as well as a 3G variant in international markets -- in the in the first quarter of 2014. Samsung, however, has yet to divulge any official pricing details.

Widgets gone wild
The Galaxy NotePro ships with Android 4.4, but that actually may not be so apparent at first glance. The TouchWiz interface has been replaced with what the company has christened Magazine UX. It's a much more graphical UI that uses widgets to make accessing information and apps much more immediate.

While app icons are still accessible, the default interface looks like something closer to Windows 8.1, with the screen segmented into tiles. For instance, the default home screen puts a weather widget along the left edge, while the right side is divided between a Flipboard widget at the top and an array of frequently used apps below it.

Each widget is completely interactive -- for example, swiping down on Flipboard cycles through different news stories -- and widget selection, size, placement, and orientation are all customizable. You can create several widget-filled screens like this, each with its own widgets and design.
The interface isn't the most intuitive -- I had trouble figuring out why I couldn't make certain widgets as small or as large as I wanted -- but once I learned how to do things, it all started to fall into place for me. Thankfully, Samsung was smart not to upset the apple cart too much, as you can still access apps the traditional way if widgets just aren't working for you.
Beyond the advent of widgets, the newest and coolest software feature is Remote PC, which allows the tablet to connect to and control a PC or Mac from even a world away -- during a demo in Las Vegas, the Samsung rep used the tablet to access her computer in Korea.

Earlier I compared the new Magazine UX interface to Windows 8.1, but it actually feels more like an evolution of the tweaks Samsung has made to TouchWiz over the last year or so. Samsung is attempting to answer the demands of its customer base, by bringing all the stuff that makes a tablet great more to the forefront. However, it will definitely take some getting used to.

Premium specs
The NotePro will be powered by either the latest Exynos processor or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, depending on the region in which it's purchased. It includes 3GB of RAM, which allows it to run up to four simultaneous apps at once; the previous Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition could display only two concurrent apps.

The tablet delivers impressively sharp images with a 2,560x1,600 resolution screen. Front cameras are rated at 2 megapixels, while the rear camera delivers 8-megapixel images with LED flash.
As with all Samsung tablets, the NotePro features a microSD expansion port, an IR blaster, and a micro USB port for charging, and comes in both 32GB and 64GB configurations.

Design
The NotePros all follow Samsung's new house design for tablets first seen on the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition and Galaxy Note 3. This includes the leather-like backing, faux stitching at the top, and a plastic spine that closely resembles some type of shiny silver metal.

I'm a fan of this design despite the counterfeit nature of its materials and the plastic feel of the bezel. The corners are smooth, the body thin, but at 1.6 pounds, the 12.2-inch tablet is best laid flat on a desk.

First thoughts
I like premium tablets, and the NotePro's specs speak to the side of me that gets excited about running benchmarks. These are Samsung tablets however, so they will not be cheap, but their success will depend on how consumers react to Magazine UX.
I do like that Samsung is doing something that feels different. It's taking a chance with the new interface, and I'd honestly rather see that than just another Android tablet, regardless of its premium appeal.

Pebble Steel declassified: Raising the smartwatch design bar without breaking the mold

The Pebble smartwatch has evolved from Kickstarter darling to retail success despite a somewhat homely appearance. This is the story of how the company's next watch, the $250 Steel, came to be.

If 2014 is to be the year of the wearable it's at least partly thanks to the success of the Pebble in 2013. Sure, it was 2012 that the company's smartwatch hit Kickstarter and promptly blew the minds of many would-be entrepreneurs, raising a record-breaking $10 million on the crowd-funding site. But it was last year, 2013, that the watch finally shipped, hit retail, and rocketed past 300,000 sales worldwide.

To secure the next 300,000 wrists, Pebble knows it needs to do better. While the company's first watch has a lot of things going for it, posh look and feel are not among its selling points. Some call it "casual," others say "sporty," both euphemisms for what many would call "cheap." Pebble needs a product that looks as good as it works, and thus the Pebble Steel.

The Steel is a new smartwatch designed to complement the existing Pebble, not replace it. It does exactly the same things but looks far nicer on the wrist while doing them, an aesthetic distinction that, according to the company, makes it worth a $250 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) -- $100 more than the base Pebble. A small team has worked in secret for the last six months to create a project code-named Bianca. This is the story of how the Pebble Steel came to be.

300,000 sales across 150 countries is huge for such a small company -- just 45 employees as of December, up from 11 at the end of 2012 (and seemingly climbing by the minute). Pebble's new offices in Palo Alto, Calif., feature an open floor plan with plenty of exposed concrete and raw woodwork. Typical startup stuff, and in typical startup fashion many predict they'll soon be moving again into ever-larger accommodations.

The success of Pebble is even more impressive if you look at the current watch's predecessor: 2009's inPulse. Never heard of it? You're not alone. The chunky wearable offered a color screen and poor battery life, while lack of extensibility and support for major platforms kept it from ever gaining mainstream traction. While calling it a failure would be too harsh, as a standalone product it couldn't be labeled a success.

Except that it was. It served as the training ground for the people who would go on to make Pebble and, now, Steel. People like Steven Johns, lead industrial designer responsible for the inPulse, the Pebble, and the Steel -- or Bianca, as he prefers to call it. Bianca was the Steel's code name, a character from "The Adventures of Tintin" comics. (Indeed, the Pebble itself was "Tintin" during development.)

As with the Pebble before, there were no shortage of early concepts. These watches, most of which never made it past a conceptual rendering stage, experimented with different styles, finishes, and even orientations. Some of the watches offered a curiously and distinctly wide-screen look, though most offered more traditional layouts. Two were good enough for final consideration, with the more traditional of the two getting the nod according to Johns.

"The look was playing a bit of an homage to the 3C industry," said Johns. "It was what people would expect what a smart watch would be. It was playing homage to that as well as playing homage to the precursors, the old calculator watches from Casio. Not an inspiration directly, but certainly a precursor with a nice flat screen...Bianca was taking it to the next step and trying to bring a class to that otherwise traditional computerized watch."

CEO Eric Migicovsky describes Steel as a more formal version of Pebble: "I'm going out for dinner, I'm wearing a suit, I've got a position that doesn't allow me to wear a plastic watch on my wrist. How do I benefit from a smartwatch? How do I get notifications and run all the apps that Pebble offers without having to put something that I don't prefer on my wrist. We took that as an industrial design problem. It wasn't really a software problem...We just had to build an aesthetically different Pebble."

Reducing the size of the watch was a major consideration as well, the team hoping to add some additional appeal to the fairer sex along the way. "Part of the idea was to bring it to be a little more feminine," said Johns. "I was desperately trying to shrink the overall profile." And that they did, creating a metal watch that weighs just 45 grams. That's two grams lighter than even the plastic Pebble, and it's significantly smaller, too, crucially along the "lug-to-lug length." That is, the size of the face as measured between the strap mounts.

Optimization here was key. "That one dimension has more of an effect physically than any of the other dimensions on the watch," according to CEO Eric Migicovsky. "If you're off by a half a millimeter in that dimension you can feel it." So just how much shorter is the Steel along that dimension? Four millimeters. You'd think it would be an imperceptible difference, but it's quite the opposite. The Steel looks and feels much smaller.

Still, it's far from feminine, particularly if you opt for the black model. Color is applied using a process called physical vapor deposition, or PVD. It's used on many high-end watches to create a durable finish, and Johns assures it will be far more scratch-resistant than the black anodized iPhone5 proved. A raw, stainless version of the watch will be available as well.

The main body and buttons are injection-molded, but the backing and bezel are cold-forged, creating a durable chassis that's far, far nicer looking and feeling than the plastic body of the Pebble. But, the team inadvertently created something else in the process. "You know what we just designed?" CEO Migicovsky asks rhetorically. "We designed a Faraday cage on your wrist. It's inside a thing of stupid milled steel."

A Faraday cage is a metal (or metal mesh) box that blocks all external transmissions. They're great if you're looking to provide a clean, interference-free area for controlled testing of a device's wireless performance. A Faraday cage will ensure that no signals get in or out. However, when the device itself is blocking it's own transmissions, that obviously poses a bit of a problem.

Apple, maker of many a fine, alloy-bodied device, has struggled with this situation in the past. The Antennagate debacle with the iPhone 4 brought this sort of issue to the world's attention. Many of the company's devices (notably the iPad) use plastic sections to allow transmission, while the iPhone 5 and 5S include glass windows to ensure those devices' many transmissions get to their intended targets.

Andrew Witte is Pebble's CTO and a hardware designer on Pebble and Steel: "Antenna design for a watch is pretty tough because it's on your wrist and your wrist absorbs a lot of radio waves, specifically in frequencies that Bluetooth uses... After Apple's experience with the iPhone and antenna problems we did a lot of testing to make sure that if it had water droplets on it or if you were holding it and clicking buttons that you would still get good performance."

Like Apple, Pebble turned to a plastic window of sorts, in this case a ring that separates the body of the watch from the bezel. The bezel acts as the antenna and body then becomes the ground, actually resulting in better Bluetooth performance than the plastic-bodied Pebble (which situates its antenna behind the lower-right button).

Another concern was durability of the watch face itself. The curved, clear plastic of the Pebble has proven reasonably resistant to abuse, but the Steel needed something better. "We were looking at doing a sapphire lens or Gorilla Glass," said Johns. "Sapphire was extremely cost-prohibitive, but also has some durability issues. Gorilla Glass is strong but did scratch, whereas sapphire doesn't scratch, but it breaks." Ultimately the team went with Gorilla Glass, commonplace on various consumer electronics devices, thanks to the cost, thinness, and durability of the material.
 
Keeping the devs happy

While a small team at Pebble has been working on Bianca/Steel since mid-2013, the primary focus of the company has long been developer support. Of those 45 (or so) current employees, nearly half are software engineers, heads-down on building the tools and functionality to enable the next generation of Pebble experiences -- experiences that will come not through new hardware, but new software.
This was another important lesson learned from the inPulse, a watch that shipped with support only for BlackBerry devices. It also offered very limited app and developer support, compared with the Pebble and the Steel, which support Android and iOS. (Though, notably, not BlackBerry. At least, not officially.) This shift in platform support and focus on developers was one of the many lessons the Pebble team has picked up thanks to a willingness to experiment.

"I think one of the best ways that we can produce quality and useful interactions for our users is just by trying things," said Migicovsky. "I think that's very reflective for our company as a whole."
CTO Andrew Witte originally joined the team to build better firmware for inPulse, and helped to shape the broader developer support that would come in the later products. "We hacked app support into inPulse and it was popular, but Pebble was really designed around apps." App support is good, but for developers, change is bad. That's why Pebble Steel doesn't mess with the core equation.
Same CPU, same display, same developer interface. "Developers won't see any difference," said Witte, "and that was one of the goals. We're in the early stages of fostering an app development ecosystem and we want to provide good continuity for them." Though there is one change: an RGB notification LED. This is hidden on the bottom of the Steel's face, enabled through an extension to the API that won't break compatibility with the existing Pebble apps.

While the focus for the immediate future of Pebble is on software, launching the app store to allow for more comprehensive app discovery, it's clear that more new hardware will come. "We will continue to diversify between metal and plastic products in the future," Johns said. "We like the differing aesthetics."

They're not entirely opposed to changing up more than aesthetics, though. Johns admits that there are some users who will want more: "When we launch this, will we get flak for not having a color screen? Then we'll have no choice but to potentially launch a colored screen like good 'ol inPulse. Sacrifice something for something else." Something like battery life.

For Migicovsky, though, the biggest hardware changes won't come within the watch itself, but the universe of devices around it. "Pebble will actually become the best heads-up display for [Bluetooth] LE sensors in your life...The way that we're going to expand the functionality of the hardware is by wirelessly talking to those sensors," he said. Imagine a fitness app that displays heart rate or a geocaching app showing distance to the next waypoint -- not thanks to a heart rate monitor or GPS in the watch itself, but Bluetooth connections to those discrete devices.

Will this be enough to fend off the approaching competition from the likes of Samsung and, soon, Apple? Migicovsky believes that simplicity, in this case, is the company's greatest asset: "When we talk about Pebble we're talking about the tiny moments in your life that it becomes extremely useful...When you put a wearable computer onto your wrist or onto your body in some way, it has to make your life better. If it doesn't, of if it actually makes your life worse through poor battery life or bad usability, it's so easy to just take it off and not use it anymore. That's not what we're about. We're about building a product that people want to use on their wrist in their daily life."

It's unlikely that Steel alone will push the company on to the next 300,000 wrists, but as more and more manufacturers stumble their way into the wearable sector this year, Pebble, with its years of experience, loyal developers, and selection of devices, is certainly looking well-positioned.


Vizio: We've made the best TV in the world

TV makers routinely boast about picture quality, but when a claim like "Best TV in the World" comes from a company like Vizio—best known for its bargain boob tubes—it seems especially far-fetched.
The television in question is the Vizio Reference Series, all-new for 2014. The company is announcing 65- and 120-inch versions at CES 2014. The latter is the largest shipping TV announced this year, as far as I know, beating out Samsung's 110-inch S9.

In Vizio's own words: "Starting from scratch and building from the ground up, Reference Series sets a new benchmark for best in class TV." To prove its mettle it has to outperform OLED models like the Samsung KN55S9C and a bunch of new LGs, plasmas like the Panasonic ZT60 and Samsung PNF8500, and fellow flagship LED LCD TVs like the LG UB9800 and the aforementioned Samsung S9, which seems its closest competitor.

The Reference Series has all the bona fides required on paper. 4K resolution. A color gamut that approaches the lofty heights of Rec 2020, something never before claimed by any TV. A true 10-bit panel, for finer color gradations. A full-array local dimming LED LCD backlight, complete with 384 zones and "incredibly precise" control thanks to "Active Pixel Tuning." A searing 800-nit Ultra Bright backlight combined with Dolby's own HDR processing for more realistic contrast.
Vizio also notes some mouth-watering processing specs. A "motion rate of 1800" might be inflated, but in any case the TV should bust blur with the best of 'em. A quad-core GPU and dual-core CPU power image and graphics processing as well as Smart TV. A pair of dedicated engines handle upconversion, detail enhancement and gamma control, while simultaneously reducing noise and artifacts. The TV can even display games at 120 frames-per-second, and film at both 24 and 48 FPS. Now if only New Line would release a compatible HFR version of The Hobbit.

Connectivity includes five HDMI inputs, all blessed with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliance. The requisite HEVC decoding is also on-board, hardware-based, for efficient 4K streaming from so-enabled apps like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. Like Vizio's other 4K TVs, it also supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi, with "dual band MIMO support for UHD streaming."

All these specs and more amount to a videophile's dream LCD TV—if that's not a contradiction in terms. And there is precedent. The best LED LCD TV we've ever reviewed, Sharp's Elite, impressed videophiles enough to take a prestigious shootout. The Reference Series is a similar beast on paper, and if Vizio can deliver on its promises, a new videophile king will be crowned. At least until OLEDs get bigger.

Beyond its picture, the Reference series also sports improved sound thanks to a modular, detachable sound bar, included, separate left and right rear speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer--although for a TV that's bound to break the bank anyway, a third-party dedicated sound system is probably in order.
Vizio TVs aren't known for their cutting-edge styling, but the company's description does its darndest to overcome that perception. It mentions "High-end, style with meticulously detailed craftsmanship, hand-assembled with finest material and innovative construction," a "Solid metal base...machined...to perfect the surfacing and finish" and "near edge-to-edge display."

So yeah, on paper the Vizio Reference series seems to back up its claims, and in a brief demo I saw of preproduction units I saw little to contradict its lofty aims. I can't wait to see how the picture looks during a review of a full production sample in my lab. Vizio assured me it would ship this year, so we'll see.

AT&T dials up toll-free 'Sponsored Data' as CES starts

Long-talked about, AT&T is the first of the carriers to pull the trigger on the 1-800 equivalent of data that wouldn't count against customers' caps.

LAS VEGAS -- AT&T is shaking up how it will deliver and charge for specific kinds of data.
The company on Monday introduced "Sponsored Data," or data that is paid is for by a business that wouldn't count against a subscriber's capped plan. Think a toll free 1-800 number or free shipping for the delivery of data.

The notion of subsidized data crops up at a time when subscribers are wrestling with more limitations on how much data their phones and tablets can consume each month. AT&T and Verizon Wireless in particular have been aggressive in getting their customers to switch to tiered plans that require people to pay more to get more data.

Enter Sponsored Data. The program could theoretically provide a break on certain media or Web sites that are delivered over a cellular network. For example, an early partner, United Health Group, plans to offer educational videos and its visual interactive voice response app under Sponsored Data to encourage patients to more frequently use those resources.

Mobile advertising provider Aquto plans to use it to entice customers to watch ads, including longer product commercials, without any data penalty.
There's also an opportunity for businesses to provide their customers or even employees with toll-free data. Kony Solutions, which provides enterprise mobility management services, is another early partner.

Other potential services could be video teleconferencing, access to your bank information, or uploads of photos of a car accident to your insurance company -- with the data tab picked up by the company.
Not everyone is enamored with the announcement. Consumer advocate group Free Press has already criticized the plan.

"Caps are supposed to help wireless carriers manage congestion," Free Press Policy Director Matt Wood said in a statement. "But if getting a big check from another company suddenly makes AT&T's congestion concerns go away, that shows data caps aren't necessary in the first place. Caps are merely another way to pad AT&T's profits."

Wood said that AT&T is essentially double-charging for the delivery of data -- consumers are still paying their monthly fees, but now companies are encouraged to pay on their end as well.
Sponsored Data should start to pop up on phones and tablets later in the first quarter. Customers will see a Sponsored Data icon signifying the toll-free data, and the data will be delivered at the same speed as normal. There will also be a list of Sponsored Data content displayed on the monthly phone bill.

AT&T sees Sponsored Data as another business potential opportunity and a way to slightly offset the limitations that it has placed on its customers. While the company said it is largely pleased with customer reaction to tiered data plans, smaller competitors have been making noise about offering unlimited data, negating the need for toll-free data.
AT&T said the caps are required after seeing 30,000 percent growth in mobile data traffic over the last six years.

"Sponsored content will provide a compelling option for customers who may need to keep a closer eye on their data usage month-to-month, removing a potential barrier to usage or viewership," according to a company representative.

Sponsored Data, meanwhile, provides another revenue stream -- this time from businesses -- at a time when growth in wireless revenue from AT&T's core cellphone service is slowing and its landline and enterprise businesses continue to stagnate.

The program was one of the marquee announcements at AT&T's annual developer conference, held on the first unofficial day of the Consumer Electronics Show.

T-Mobile buys Verizon wireless spectrum in $3.3 billion deal

The carrier will pay its rival nearly $2.37 billion and give it spectrum worth $950 million for some valuable low-frequency bands to help build its LTE network.

T-Mobile has signed a deal to buy blocks of 700MHz radio-frequency spectrum from Verizon Wireless for nearly $2.37 billion and to give up some wireless spectrum of its own worth $950 million, the company announced Monday.

Wireless spectrum is a precious commodity, particularly for a company like T-Mobile that's seeking to catch up to Verizon and AT&T in 4G coverage. The 700MHz range is useful because the lower-frequency radio signals penetrate building walls better and travel farther from antennas in rural areas; T-Mobile will be giving up higher-frequency AWS and PCS bands.

"This is a great opportunity to secure low-band spectrum in many of the top markets in America," T-Mobile Chief Executive John Legere said in a statement. The purchase, if approved by the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department, will mean T-Mobile gets new spectrum in nine of the top 10 markets and 21 of the top 30 markets, it said.

For the company to compete effectively, it must also shore up LTE coverage outside major cities, a necessity it didn't detail.

An FCC filing detailed some of the T-Mobile-Verizon spectrum swap, though not the cash payment that T-Mobile plans to make. T-Mobile scrounged up the money for the deal by selling bonds worth $2 billion and selling stock worth about $1.8 billion in November.

Both T-Mobile and Sprint are working to keep pace with AT&T and Verizon in the US. Softbank acquired Sprint and could be working on a deal to buy out T-Mobile USA, too. T-Mobile USA, meanwhile, is shaking up the industry with customer-friendly subscription plans and features such as free international roaming.

A new big-screen Book 9 laptop from Samsung (hands-on)

Since it started selling PCs in the US several years ago, we've always been impressed with the design and build quality of many Samsung laptops, hybrids, and all-in-one desktops. The company's highest-end products have undergone a few naming tweaks over the years, and are now known as the Ativ Book series.

We reviewed a 13-inch Ativ Book 9 in late 2013, and it was a true upscale MacBook Air competitor, with an excellent slim, lightweight design and better-than-HD screen resolution, even if it was on the expensive side.


The new model unveiled at CES 2014 is the Samsung Ativ Book 9 (2014 Edition), which is a 15.6-inch ultrabook-style laptop. Larger-screen slim laptops are less common than smaller ones, but can be a great balance between productivity and portability.

The 15.6-inch screen has a 1,920x1,080 native resolution, comes with either an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, integrated Intel 4400 graphics, and can be configured with up to a 1TB of combined SSD storage (the larger chassis allows for two drives).

Samsung is also including new audio decoding hardware that can play back lossless 24bit/192kHz audio, such as you'd get in a ATRAC file. Only a handful of online music providers supply lossless music, but it's an interesting pitch for audiophiles.


In our brief hands-on time with the system it certainly felt very thin and premium, and more ultrabook-like than similar slim 15-inch laptops from Apple or Dell.

The Ativ Book 9 (2014 Edition) will be available later in 2014, and while no price has been announced yet, based on previous Samsung laptops, it should cost north of $1,200.

Mac Pro (2013) processor upgradable

Despite its unique design, the new Pro's CPU is easily upgradable.


Apple's new Mac Pro offers a unique package that moves away from the traditional box-like shape of desktop systems, to encompass a compact, cylindrical form factor. While this new design has had some people concerned about the serviceability of the system, in recent teardowns it has been revealed that despite some proprietary connections, the system's components are surprisingly accessible.

One of the noted features of the new Mac Pro is its that its CPU is not soldered to the motherboard, and instead uses a standard socket to clamp the CPU's packaging. This means that the CPU is upgradable, and may only require swapping out the chip itself to give the Mac Pro a boost offered by new generations of CPUs, as they are developed.

While the upgradability of the CPU has been speculated, Mac supply company OWC recently put this to the test. They purchased a stock Mac Pro with an Intel E5-1650 V2 6-core CPU running at 3.5GHz and with 12MB cache, and swapped it out with an Intel E5-2667 V2 8-core processor, running at 3.3GHz with 25MB cache.

All the upgrade took was this simple swap, and the system booted and ran with the new number of processing cores recognized and fully used.

Upon testing the new CPU out using Geek Bench, the system showed an approximate 30 percent increase in multiprocessing performance, as would be expected for an increase from six cores to eight. This result and the ease of upgrading as an option is good news for owners of the new Mac Pro. With the cost of the ES-2667 around $2,000, the price of a 30 percent boost may not be worth it at present, prices will undoubtedly fall and make this a more feasible option in the future.

Samsung teams with Amazon, Comcast, studios on 4K video.

Alongside Samsung's CES press conference, Amazon teams up with the Korean computer maker plus Warner, Lionsgate, and others for 4K video. It's not alone: M-Go and Comcast partner with Samsung too.

Amazon, as well as television and film studios, cable company Comcast, and pay-as-you-go digital movie and TV streaming service M-Go, have teamed up with Samsung to deliver 4K video.
The announcements were released to coincide with a Samsung press conference Monday in Las Vegas as part of the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show.

Amazon Instant Video said it was working with Samsung, as well as top Hollywood studios and TV programmers like Warner Bros., Lionsgate, 20th Century Fox, Discovery, and more to offer Amazon customers a premium 4K video experience.

Without providing many details, the e-commerce giant's announcement about broad 4K partnerships follows news last month that it would shoot all 2014 full original series, including comedies and dramas, in 4K.

Earlier Monday, Amazon streaming rival Netflix showed up at LG's press conference to announce a partnership with Samsung's smaller Korean rival. Netflix, which is working with a number of electronics makers on the technology, has said its flagship original series, "House of Cards," would be filmed and offered in 4K this year.

4K is the top high-resolution video standard, which at 3,840x2,160 pixels, or 8.3 million pixels, is four times the number of pixels as standard full HD.

Comcast, the cable company that also owns NBC, said that later this year customers of its Xfinity TV cable package who have Samsung Ultra HD TVs will be able to launch an Xfinity TV 4K app directly on their TVs letting them stream 4K movies and TV shows on demand.

Comcast said it was working with programmers, including its subsidiary NBCUniversal, to provide a library of 4K choices for the Xfinity TV 4K app.

M-Go, which is a joint venture of Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation that offers TV shows and movies to stream, said it has developed a 4K streaming service to launch on Samsung UHD TVs in the spring. For content that wasn't filmed or post-produced in 4K, Technicolor and M-Go's 4K Optimized solution takes the source files from its licensed content partners and reprocesses them to enhance the visual crispness, color acuity, and image depth for 4K television owners.
At the press conference, Joe Stinziano, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics America, said DirectTV was working to offer a 4K streaming service as well.

Intel kills off McAfee Security brand

Intel takes branding ownership of McAfee's computer security suite and severs founder John McAfee's name from the security software that has borne it for more than 20 years.

Throughout the years of John McAfee's madman antics, the founder of computer security firm McAfee Security always had his name associated with the shield logo of McAfee Antivirus and its variations.

But with a few sentences casually thrown out to the Consumer Electronics Show audience in Las Vegas on Monday evening, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich sounded the death knell for the McAfee brand, at least as far as it relates to consumer security.

The software will remain unchanged except for changing the name from McAfee Security to Intel Security. The iconic red McAfee shield will remain, for now, and some components of the mobile versions of the software now will be free to use on iOS and Android devices. The rebranding is expected to take up to a year to complete.

"Intel is bringing its award-winning mobile security to every mobile device, phones, tablets, wearables," Krzanich said during Intel's keynote.
A request for comment by Intel as to which of the McAfee security programs would be rebranded, and which features would become free, was not immediately returned. Intel said that it plans to release more details in the coming months.
An entire generation of computer users were introduced to computer security through McAfee software. John McAfee founded the company in 1987 and left in 1994.

McAfee's security software had suffered in recent years from increased competition from free security suites and its slow entry into the iOS and Android markets. Less helpful, too, were lingering negative associations with the brand and other security suites from the early 2000s, when security suites were notorious for either failing at their assigned tasks or slowing down computers to a painful crawl.

Intel also plans to introduce the new Intel Device Protection app later this year, which is designed to help protect people using personal phones and tablets in work situations. In ditching the name McAfee, tainted by too many years of mistakes and its founder's buffoonery, Intel hopes to appeal to home and enterprise consumer's more serious side.
